A Guide to Wall Moulding Installation

Whether you have a builder-grade home or a home that just needs some sprucing, wall moulding is the perfect solution to adding charm and character to any new or existing home!

Wall moulding is a material used to create decorative finishes around a home. Installing wall mouldings throughout your home will add desirable charm and interest, creating a timeless warm, and welcoming environment!

Our Finished Inspirations team is guiding you through the breezy DIY process of installing your very own wall moulding. Let’s dive in!

Along with moulding materials you can pick up from Lowes, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Miter saw
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • Construction grade adhesive
  • Finishing nails
  • Painter’s caulk
  • Preference of finishing (paint or stain)

Steps:

  1. Pick out the perfect wall moulding design for your home. Your pattern can be as simple or as complex as you wish!
  2. Pick up your preferred pre-primed or pre-finished moulding at Lowes.
  3. Measure out and mark the placement for your chosen pattern.
  4. Run level lines to ensure your pattern is perfectly level.
  5. Measure and cut moulding to fit your pattern.
  6. Tack the moulding onto the wall with a nail gun. You can also use a hammer and finish nails if you don’t own a nail gun!
  7. Fill in any gaps between the moulding and the wall with the painter’s caulk.
  8. Finish your mouldings with your preferred paint color or finish.

This project can be done on any wall, in any room, in any home – including standard builder-grade drywall walls. When you finish this project, you won’t even recognize your room! The upgrades don’t have to stop there, you can add both baseboard moulding and crown moulding to your rooms to complete the charm and character in your home!
